Lavender | Growing Herbs

GROWING LAVENDER

Many varietals of Lavender are annuals north of Zone 5 and perennials in Zones 5-8. Lavender's Latin name is Lavandula.

There are many varieties of Lavender, but in climates in the northern midwest, good bets are Munsted and Twickle Purple (recommended by Judy Lewis, herb guru, of Lewis Mountain Herbs and Everlastings in Adams County, Ohio).

The variety Hidcote, or English Lavender, has pretty blossoms, but sometimes it doesn’t survive our winter in Southwest Ohio.

Lavender is a lovely container herb.

Like rosemary, lavender doesn’t like wet feet but this perennial member of the mint family thrives on sun and good drainage.

Harvest the lavender flower just as is starts to open.

Growing Lavender is easy as a border or edging. It does well from seed and can be used in planters. Full sun is preferred for growing lavender.
