Oregano | Growing Herbs

Oregano and marjoram are perennial members of the mint family. Oregano's Latin name is Origanum.

Native to the Mediterranean, they like well-drained soil and lots of sun. These herbs can range in height and spread from six inches to almost two feet.

Most commonly thought of in Italian dishes like pasta sauces and pizza, oregano is used in the food of many cultures.

Oregano is hardy in zones 5 to 10. If starting from seed, the plant will need to be started early inside and then transferred to the garden or pots after the danger of frost has passed.

Many nurseries carry oregano which can easily be transplanted. The taste of your fresh oregano will vary from one variety to another. Greek Oregano is recommended.

A garden in full sun is best for growing oregano.
